Mary Dessert Artist Statement:

The simplicity and directness of the drawing process is alluring to me. I make both drawings on paper and mixed media drawings on panels. The mixed media panels developed from a search for new surfaces to draw on. Initially I created ink drawings on panels and then started exploring various tools (xacto knives, dremel carving tool, belt sander, etc.) to make marks on the panel surfaces. These alternate “drawing” methods are frequently combined with acrylic paint and sometimes collage. In each medium there is a focus on small mark making to record a “history” for the shapes that emerge.
I work intuitively with no foreseen outcome other than that a key shape or shapes will be found and made to exist. I make an initial mark and the process follows as a series of reactions to that mark. Some things are removed (erased, painted or sanded out) and others are clearly defined. This process of discovery is the impetus for my work.
It is my hope that my abstractions have a puzzling familiarity. I seek to express the essence of being not a specific reality. The work is about delineating large forms and a focus on small details. The work speaks to both the randomness and specificity of being. They are snapshots of a particular moment in time and are about making specific choices from random information to define existence.
